My Nana and Me

My Nana loved me
Maybe more than anyone else ever has
She took care of me
She respected me
She cooked delicious and nutritious food for me
She gave me back rubs and nose rubs and foot rubs
She stood up for me when I was being bullied at school
She came to almost all of my school recitals
We had picnics and went on road trips. We talked about life, we shared hugs and laughter, and we enjoyed spending time together. We even shared the same initials (E.W.)

In Nana’s boudoir, I sat beside her as she combed my hair
The smell of her perfume and hairspray still lingers in my nostrils
We collected shells and sand dollars together on the beach in Parksville
We roasted marshmallows over the campfire
She made me a mermaid Barbie cake for my birthday when I was little
Her blue ring changed colours in the sunlight and made me feel happy
The smell of soil in her garden shed
The smell of Nana’s homemade roast beef, steamed vegetables, and Yorkshire pudding
After dinner: a friendly game of poker, Big Band music from the 1940’s, tea, and pie
Nana and I would go downstairs to do some art and crafts in the basement
When we were finished we would go into the living room; Nana would knit slippers and blankets while we watched Jeopardy on TV.

Sometimes my Nana would drink too much and start crying,
but she never once hurt me or caused me pain.
I could always count on her to be there for me when I needed her.

Now that she is gone, I miss her very much
I wish we could share more happy times together
She was the best grandmother in the whole world
and I feel grateful that she was in my life.
Thank you for everything Nana. I love you.
